Growing Up and Early Life

The younger Harden brother was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 26, 1989. His parents were Monja Wills and James Harden Sr. At the time of his birth, his father was in the “US Navy,” and his mother worked in Pasadena as an executive for “AT&T.”

The father of James spent a lot of time in bars because he used drugs. James has since grown apart from his father and still won’t use “Jr.” as part of his name.

James lived in the “Rancho Dominguez” neighborhood of Compton for most of his childhood. His sister was named Arnique Jelks and his half-brother was named Akili Roberson.

James went to Lakewood, California’s “Artesia High School.” After that, he played for Arizona State.

Start of Career

James Harden first played basketball in school and kept doing it all through college before turning pro. In his second year, he led “Artesia” to a 28–5 record.

In his junior year, he led “Artesia” to the California state title with a 33–1 record. Du their last year, they also went 33–2, keeping their title as state winners. He made the second team of the “Parade All-American” and was named a “McDonald’s All-American.”

His first year at “Arizona State” wasn’t exactly a dream.

People in the “Pac-10” thought that his team, the “Sun Devils,” was one of the worst. James led his team to a 9–9 conference record with sophomore point guard Derek Glasser and junior forward Ty Pendergraph. With a total score of 21–13, they tied for fifth place in the “Pac-10.”

The “Sun Devils” didn’t make it to the “NCAA Tournament” in 2008. Instead, they played in the “National Invitation Tournament” (NIT) and beat the “Florida Gators” twice. James was named to both the “All-Pac-10” first team and the “All-Freshman” team for the league.

‘All-District’ first teams were made up of players from the ‘National Association of Basketball Coaches’ (NABC) and the ‘United States Basketball Writers Association’ (USBWA). That same year, he scored 40 points, which was the most in his career, in an 88–58 win over UTEP.

He was also on the cover of the college basketball issue of “Sports Illustrated” and on the pre-season watch list for the “Wooden Award.”

Everyone agreed that he was a “All-American,” and after the season, he was considered for the “NBA Draft.”

The Oklahoma City Thunder picked Harden third overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, which took place during the 2009–2010 season. Harden became the fourth-best 3-point shooter in NBA history for players under 21 years old.

He made the “NBA-All-Rookie” second team and scored 26 points against the “Golden State Warriors” in 2009. That game was the high point of his season. By 2011–2012, he was an important part of the team. His season-high score of 40 points against the Phoenix Suns made him the first NBA backup player to score 40 points, following Rodrigue Beaubois.

‘NBA Sixth Man of the Year’ Award went to him too. He helped the “Thunder” get to the “NBA Finals,” but the “Miami Heat” beat them.

James Harden extended his contract with the “Houston Rockets” for an additional $80 million in 2012. This was because he and the “Thunder” were unable to come to an agreement. He averaged 25.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game during the season, which are all very impressive numbers.

His stats made him the fifth player in NBA history to score 2,000 points in a single season. He became the fourth player in NBA history to make at least 150 3-pointers and at least 600 free throws in a single season, after Gilbert Arenas, Kobe Bryant, and Jerry Stackhouse.

Besides that, he was picked for the “All-NBA Third Team” in 2012–2013. This was his first “All-NBA Team” honor. During the 2013–2014 season, he was picked to play in the “NBA All-Star Game” in 2014.

Last season, he scored 43 points against the Sacramento Kings, which was the most in his career. That week, he was named “Western Conference Player of the Week.” At the end of the season, he was named to the “All-NBA First Team.”

Harden was in the running for “MVP” early in the 2014–2015 season. He scored 51 points against the “Sacramento Kings” and 50 points against the “Denver Nuggets,” which were both career highs. James Harden was the first “NBA” player to ever score two 50-point games in a season. He was named to the “All-NBA First Team” again because he had so many triple-doubles this season.

He also helped his team win its first division title since 1994 and move up to the second spot in the “Western Conference.” James Harden was named the “Western Conference Player of the Week” for the third time in 2016 and started playing point guard.

His 14th triple-double of the season came against the Philadelphia 76ers. Harden became the first player in NBA history to have more than one season with 50 or more points and 10 or more rebounds. In a game against the Phoenix Suns, he scored 40 points in less than 30 minutes, making him the first Rockets player to do so.

At the end of the season, he had 22 triple-doubles and scored at least 2,000 points, which included 900 assists and 600 rebounds. He was the first player in NBA history to do this. He signed a four-year agreement in 2017 that made his deal six years long and worth about $228 million. This was the richest deal the NBA has ever seen.

The deal will last until the 2022–2023 season. He had an average of 22.1 points and 5.7 assists per game before the season.

He got 56 points in a win over the Utah Jazz, which is one less than Calvin Murphy’s record of 57 points set in 1978. For the fifth time, he won “Western Conference Player of the Month.” He was the first player in team history to score 20 points in all 20 games in the first 20 games of the season.

Even though he scored 50 points, the “Los Angeles Lakers” beat his team 122–116, ending their 14-game winning streak. But in a game against the “Los Angeles Clippers,” Harden scored 50 points in back-to-back games, making him the first player in the team’s history to do so.

He missed seven games because of a hamstring issue. With a record of 65–17, the “Rockets” won 60 games and came first for the first time in the team’s history.

Harden also played for his country in the 2012 Olympics, where they won the gold title. He also played for his country in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which they won.

Before the 2016 “Olympics,” he took his name off the team.

Achievements and Awards

James Harden has been named a “NBA All-Star” six times and to the “All-NBA Team” five times. ‘NBA First Team’ picked him four times. In 2018, he was named the “NBA MVP.”

He was also chosen as the “MVP” of the National Basketball Players Association for the 2014–2015 and 2017–2018 seasons.
